Biography

Acclaimed as a ‚sensitive’ and ‚imaginative’ performer, Luxembourg-born Max Mausen has established himself as one of the UK’s foremost clarinet players, performing regularly as guest principal with orchestras including the BBC Concert Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Back in his native country, he often works with the Luxembourg Philharmonic and Luxembourg Chamber Orchestra, as well as contemporary music ensemble ‘United Instruments of Lucilin’. For the 2014-2015 season he was appointed Principal Clarinet with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, and moved back to London to join Southbank Sinfonia for their 2016 season.
As a soloist and chamber musician Max makes appearances in a multitude of genres including contemporary music and jazz. Recent collaborations included premieres of works by Alexandre Desplat and Peter Eötvös. In 2019 he was asked to perform Mozart‘s clarinet concerto with the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra for the official ceremony on Luxembourg National Day at the Luxembourg Philharmonie, which was broadcast live on national television.
Max made his concerto debut at the Barbican Centre, performing Copland’s concerto forclarinet with the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra. For this performance he was awarded the Glass-sellers’ Trophy as part of the Guildhall School’s Gold Medal competition. Max’sdebut solo album 'New Waves' was released in 2014 to critical acclaim, showcasing his interpretations of both standard repertoire and new works for the clarinet.
Max started his musical education at the Conservatoire in Luxembourg City. He later studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where he was awarded a BMus Hons and MMus, and has since made the city his home. His teachers have included Marcel Lallemang, Julian Farrell, Nicholas Carpenter, Andrew Marriner, Andrew Webster, Laurent Ben Slimane (Bass clarinet) and Jenny McLaren (Eb clarinet).
